NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
2 p.m. SATURDAY, MAY 13 at ST. HILDA’S HALL
All Sandy Hookers are invited to the meeting for nomination and election of new
officers, annual report and refreshments. We especially welcome newcomers and hope
you will take an active part in the Association and its various activities. Bring
your neighbours and friends, and let’s have a good time. Remember, we like to
mix business with p1easure
To bring you up to date on 1988 year-end activities, the Carol Ships or SING
(Sechelt Inlet Nativity Gala) had over 70 participants in its second year, filling
three passenger launches and netting 30 which was donated to the Sechelt Food
Bank. The growing interest and participation in this event will spur us on to
have an even bigger and better show next year.
Christmas Dinner at the Parthenon was enjoyed by over SO people and by Santa
who entertained us with now and original verses and found a surprise for each
one of us in his huge sack of presents. Next year we hope to rent a private
place for our festivities which will allow us to arrange seating, timing, and
entertainment exactly as we like and to have food catered, all at a reasonable
cost.
The Association is very active in protecting the environment of Sechelt].t
Inlet and to that end has been working with the Sechelt District Council and
the Foreshore Advisory Task Force. Our work with the Council has involved many
meetings and correspondence with them and has finally resu1td.uin .a letter
assuring us that there would be no expansion of industry in Porpoise Bay and,
in a later letter, a promise to monitor the activities of Aquarius Fish
Hatchery twice a month and to not allow any expansion of their activities. We
have our own representative on the Foreshore Advisory Task Force, meeting with
officials from the Provincial government and the SCRD. Some noteworthy results of
these meetings are: written assurance that there will be no additional fish
farms on Sechelt inlet; no docks or wharves can be built to take vehicular
traffic unless they are in the appropriate zoning covering industrial use; any
proposed change of zoning will be discussed by all committee members at a
meeting at least six weeks before the proposed change is to take place ;
fish farm fallow sites have been restricted to location immediately adjacent to
existing site but only allowed under extreme emergency; the proposed industrial
site in Tuwanek (North) has been eliminated;; an environment infraction
official has been designate4
Spring cleanup and a revival of recycling has been proposed by the Association
to District Council and met with their approval. Watch for further news.
If you want to join the Association please send 5.OO per family with your name,
address: and telephone number to John Johnson, Box 1899, and Sechelt. Membership fees are due in January.
